Dr. Michael J. Kovalchik
Hillsdale College Director of Athletics/
Department of Physical Education Chair
Dr. Mike Kovalchik is in his 12th year as Hillsdale College athletic director
and chair of the department of physical education, with the academic rank of
Professor. Prior to his tenure at Hillsdale College, Dr. Kovalchik was the
director of athletics and chair of the department of physical education at Grand
Valley State University from 1989 to 1996. Previous administrative stays
included, Ohio Northern University, Jamestown College of North Dakota, Coe
College of Iowa and Hanover College of Indiana.
Dr. Kovalchik holds a doctorate from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale,
master’s degrees from Eastern Illinois University, and State University of New
York at Cortland, and the Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Illinois
University. A former two-sport athlete and minor league baseball player, he has
coached football, wrestling and baseball throughout his collegiate career of 25
years.
Currently, Dr. Kovalchik is a member of the NCAA Division II Championships
Committee and the Division II Project Team to Review Issues Related to
Diversity. Previous NCAA committees include the Division II Management Council,
the Division II Legislation Committee and Chair of the Interpretations
Sub-committee, and the Baseball Rules Committee. He is a former recipient of the
prestigious Kellogg Foundation Grant, 1983 to 1985.
Dr. Kovalchik is a former U.S. Marine officer, U.S. Air Force officer and a
Vietnam veteran. He is married to the former Sheila Wallace.
